German 120 |
Spring 2004 German 120 is a continuation of German 110. This course will cover chapters 5 through 8 of the German program Kontakte (4th edition). German 120 will emphasize the spoken language in real life situations as well as the comprehension and application of grammatical concepts. It is one of the goals of this course to extend the communicative skills through class discussions, role-play, partner exercises etc. Experience has shown that comprehension skills can be considerably improved through working with CD-ROMs and the Internet, in addition to the tapes, videos, news broadcasts, etc. provided in the Thormann Center. Homework is assigned in
each class and includes grammar exercises, short compositions, and selected
reading material and independent lab work. All assignments have to be
completed and handed in on time in order to be accepted and graded. I
strongly recommend rewriting any written assignment after my correction. The
short compositions must be typed (double-spaced, with a 12- point font). No electronic submissions are
accepted. Late submissions of assignments will result in a lower grade (one
grade lower per extra day). Work book exercises need to be completed before each chapter test (see other side for schedule). These exercises include grammar and listening comprehension. The necessary audio files can be accessed in Blackboard. Tests are given for each chapter (see other side for schedule) on the indicated day and cannot be rescheduled. Vocabulary and grammar quizzes are part of the grade.
Attendance: Regular attendance is crucial for the successful completion of the course. Each student is allowed a maximum of 4 absences. Two percentage points will be deducted from the final grade for each additional absence. 10 and more unexcused absences will result in a failing grade. An excused absence has to be officially documented by a doctor, coach, etc. You are responsible for knowing
the material presented on a given day, even
if you are not present in class that day. Please contact a fellow student for
that information, assignments, etc. Final grade 1. Class attendance, participation, speaking
